Gift store suffers death by rent hike

Sona Cards and Gifts on Rockaway Parkway is one of those everything-in-one-place neighborhood stores most people born in the pre-Walmart age grew up with. A store where you can pick up a mixing bowl or address book, a picture frame or sweater bag, a box fan, toy balloons, toys, greeting cards, knives, silverware, loofahs, tools, lottery tickets - you get the idea.
Sona, at 1455 Rockaway Parkway, in Canarsie, Brooklyn, is scheduled to close its doors for good after 30 years, victim of a 30% rent hike that proprietor Vinod Patel says he cannot afford.
